VALDOSTA — Alexus Maria Goodrum of Lakeland, Georgia, is the recipient of the Fall 2024 President’s Award for Academic Excellence for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø.
The President’s Award for Academic Excellence is presented to a high-performing graduating student in each of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s six colleges — Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, College of the Arts, James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services, College of Science and Mathematics, and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Goodrum will be recognized during Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s 238th Commencement at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, on the Main Campus Front Lawn. She will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
“I am extremely proud to be ending my undergraduate career with this honor because I’ve always strived to do my best in absolutely everything,” she said. “This is proof that I have done just that.”
Goodrum transferred to Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø from Mercer University in 2022. Her commitment to academic excellence helped her earn the Jane Parramore Scholarship, the Virginia McCraw Gaskins Scholarship, and repeated Dean’s List honors, all while juggling multiple jobs, volunteering with Second Harvest of South Georgia, and supporting her fellow nursing students. She was also a Zell Miller Scholar.
She spent countless hours learning and perfecting her skills in Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s on-campus STEP (Simulated Training Encounters with Patients) Center and gained valuable real-world experience as a nursing student volunteer serving the needs of underserved populations in the region. She also gained valuable practical experience as a nurse extern at South Georgia Medical Center and Colquitt Regional Medical Center.
After graduation Goodrum plans to work as an orthopedic-surgical nurse at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. She hopes to eventually continue her education and become a wound care nurse practitioner.
Her supportive family includes Anna and Shannon Goodrum (parents), Morgan Goodrum (younger sister), Tammy Highsmith (grandmother), and Cade Collins (boyfriend).
