VALDOSTA — Callie Reid of Lakeland, Georgia, is the recipient of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s 2023-2024 College of Science and Mathematics Outstanding Student Award.
Reid was recognized during Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s annual Academic Honors and Awards Dinner on April 25.
The College of Science and Mathematics Outstanding Student Award is presented to a student with a record of academic excellence and distinguished service inside and outside the classroom.
“Winning this award is like the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae,” she said. “My time at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø has been a wonderful experience, and this award makes my experience even more special.”
Reid graduated May 4 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, a Minor in Applied Statistics, and a Certificate in Data Science. She plans to continue her education in the fall and pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Florida State University, where she was awarded a teaching assistantship. She hopes to someday become a mathematics professor.
Highlights of Reid’s time as a student at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø include the following:
- Presenting “A Study on the Unemployment Rates in the U.S. During the Time of the COVID-19 Pandemic by Using Topological Data Analysis and Persistence Theory” in Boston, Massachusetts, and “A Machine Learning Analysis on the Unemployment Rates in the U.S.” in San Francisco, California.
- Being a math tutor on campus.
- Winning the Elizabeth Joy Lohmar Mathematics Scholarship, which was extra special because she knows the Lohmar family.
- Working on research with Dr. Jose Velez, professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics.
- Hanging out with friends in the Student Union.
Her supportive family includes parents Lamar and Denise Reid and siblings Rena and Jacob Reid.
