VALDOSTA – Juliannie Anya Hoare of Belize City, Belize, is the recipient of the 2022 Alpha Lambda Delta Marie Leonard Book Award at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø.
“I was extremely honored and grateful for all the people who supported me to help me keep pushing to be my very best,” she said.
The Alpha Lambda Delta Marie Leonard Book Award is named for the late Marie Leonard, who founded Alpha Lambda Delta: The Honor Society for First Year Success at the University of Illinois in 1924. This award is presented annually to an active member with the highest cumulative grade point average in their graduating class.
Hoare graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, pre-medicine concentration, during Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s 233rd Commencement Ceremony on May 7.
As a student at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø, Hoare was a member of the Society of International Students. Her biggest accomplishment was stepping out of her comfort zone and becoming an orientation leader. She worked as a resident assistant for Housing and Residence Life, a tutor in the Academic Support Center, and a peer mentor for the College of Science and Mathematics.
“I wanted to show aspiring STEM majors that if I can do it, so can they,” she said.
Hoare volunteers with the World Pediatric Project, Special Olympics, the Young Women’s Christian Association, Rotary Club, and the Central Health Region, a public health department in Belize.
Hoare plans to gain experience in the medical field and apply to medical school.
Hoare’s commitment to academic, leadership, research, and service excellence resulted in her earning repeated spots on the Dean’s list, the 2019-2020 Walter R. and Dorothy S. Salter Scholarship, and recognition at the 2021 Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Her supportive family includes parents Jose and Anna Hoare.
