About This Program

Environmental geosciences is the study of earth and its four spheres: the lithosphere (the solid earth), hydrosphere (the realm of water), atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding earth) and biosphere (the realm of living things). The focus of the Geology track is on the lithosphere and hydrosphere. You will study topics related to the Earth’s structure, composition, history and processes at work to change Earth’s interior and Earth’s surface. Upon completing the degree program, you are prepared to begin your career in a variety of high-demand fields, take the Professional Geologist Exam, or enter graduate school to continue your studies in geology.

The Valdosta State Difference

We design your degree program to be flexible while providing a strong foundation in Geology. You can include your individual interests, such as environmental sustainability, ecology, and geochemistry. You will have opportunities for learning inside the classroom, lab and especially outside in the field. Our faculty are enthusiastic about hands-on learning that takes place during short field trips, overnight camping field trips, and even one three-week course that will take you and your classmates throughout the southwestern U.S. You will work closely with faculty mentors in a student-focused, supportive, and caring environment. Every student can conduct research with a faculty mentor, leading to an undergraduate thesis and formal presentations.

What You'll Learn

In this program, you will learn to unravel Earth’s history by examining rock layers, exploring spectacular geologic formations, and unveiling ancient life through the study of fossils. Coursework for this program covers the fundamentals in petrology, mineralogy, stratigraphy, hydrogeology, and even the geology of other planets. You learn everything from the top of Earth’s mountains to deep within its interior. Our faculty share their knowledge with you so that you learn theory in the classroom then apply it in labs and the field.

Cost and Length of Program

Students meeting pre-requisites for first-year courses can graduate within four years with a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Environmental Geosciences, Geology option.
